What do people mean when they say "free software"? What do we lose as a movement when we make decisions to use tools that are developed by profit-centric corporations? What community-centric alternatives exist?

In answering the above questions, we will give an accessible history of Free/Open Source software, including touching on licensing and copyright issues and then applying them to an activist community project, Radical Reference. This is a discussion for activists that use the internet as well as those that consider themselves to be techies.

Free Software and the Anti-Globalization Movement

In May of 2003 I was invited to give a presentation at a conference held at the Centre de Cultura Contemporania de Barcelona http://www.cccb.org/ on the topic of the politics of technology and the opensource/free software movement.
It was an amazing and unique experience. I was speaking in marble pillared lecture hall, with simultaneous translation into earpeices people were wearing -- people everywhere in the room were smoking hashish as I spoke. Sort of felt like the UN on dope.

The largest newspaper of Spain, El Pais, called my lecture "incendiary and well received".

This presentation brought me back for the first time in 15 years to the school I attended for 5 years. A fun and strange experience.
The discussion description from the Conference materials was:

What kinds of tools can we design or use to facilitate collaboration?
How does the creative process mirror the network? How can tools generate knowledge?
What is missing in these tools?
How we design these tools go beyond chatter?
